Sam Lee – A Ground of its Own https://thecpr.org.uk/product/sam-lee-a-ground-of-its-own/ Wed, 11 Nov 2015 11:03:17 +0000 http://thecpr.org.uk/?post_type=product&p=2950

Music from the brilliant Sam Lee and Friends who gave a concert at Giving Voice 13, Falmouth April 2015

MOJO ****: It demands patient attention but it’s an album of unusual dignity and immense beauty
Q: A dream-like quality that’s as rare as it is compelling
Uncut: Lee’s album is tremendous, blessed with courtly, uncanny, subtly radical treatments. sounding at once ancient and, in a relatively original way, contemporary.
Songlines *****
Sam’s extraordinary and wonderful debut album.
Guardian **** : an impressively brave and original set
ES ***** : a shining and original talent
Independent **** : Lee’s voice captures the mythic charm of these songs, but it’s his arrangements, at once vivid yet shrouded, which set Ground of Its Own apart
Observer **** : its downbeat, trancelike mood is unwavering, the album has a gentle, insistent power
Independent on Sunday **** : It’s rather good

The new album from singer Sam Lee is a work several years in conception which brings together a multitude of experiences and influences for a musician who has cut an unique course in his artistic development. This 8-track release with mixes done by the legendary John Wood (of Nick Drake fame) comprises material gleaned from years of research and exploration into the forgotten songs and sounds of these Isles. ‘Ground Of Its Own’ brings together songs directly sourced from English Gypsy and Irish and Scottish Traveller communities until now unheard in the wider music world. Sam’s time has been spent learning their characterful and inimitable singing styles, and deep knowledge of the land and the relationships these songs have with their history and ancestry. With this experience at the albums core, many of our indigenous musical principals – such as traditional song having pulse but not always rhythm – have helped create a contemporary idea of how future folk music might sound. What ‘Ground Of Its Own’ sets out is a new method for the interpretation of folk song which seeks to honour this rich native art form whilst marrying it to a resourceful, contemporary approach that explores the tapestries of lost sounds and new sounds that surround us always. Expect compositions filled with Jew’s Harps, Hangs, Hammer Dulcimers, Alpine Horns, Auto Harps, Shruti Boxes and Gas Cylinders amongst many others but ultimately the voice and Sam’s passion for breathing new life in to these jewels on our doorstep. All combined, what is created is an album of depth and vitality that reaches to the absolute heart of the tradition in a respectful but highly modern manner.

Ground of Its Own is wonderful. The singing is sublime and exquisite! It’s gentle and despairing, trancelike and tender. Strokes of genius there I think! Shirley Collins

When Sam Lee makes this record public he’s going to find himself with a success story on his hands…   Fiona Talkington, Late Junction

A wonderful singer and fascinating character. He’s working with musicians in a very interesting and unusual way, his arrangements are unlike anything anyone has ever really heard before.    Joe Boyd

Well it feels like its been a long time coming but here at last is somebody doing really creative things with traditional English Folk Song from the ground breaking new album.    Verity Sharp Radio 3 Late Junction

VESNA – Mariana Sadowska and Christian Thomé https://thecpr.org.uk/product/vesna-mariana-sadowska-and-christian-thome/ Wed, 11 Nov 2015 11:24:37 +0000 http://thecpr.org.uk/?post_type=product&p=2954 Music from the brilliant Mariana Sadovska who presented a concert and workshop at Giving Voice 13, April 2015, Falmouth

In her home country she is known as the ‘Ukrainian Bjork’: in her furious performances the singer, actress and composer Mariana Sadovska crosses all borders: Archaic midsummer night invocations, wedding songs and migrant chants from remote villages of rural Ukraine get a singular turn and transmute into contemporary sound that spans from folk to avant-garde. Creating innovative compositions and arrangements in dialogue with ancient traditions, Mariana Sadovska approaches each piece with a fresh and uniquely personal vision. With a voice of impressive power and range her stage presence is a tour de force that oscillates between fragility and defiance.

VESNA (SPRING) was inspired by Ukrainian Traditional songs and was composed together with her  stage partner,  jazz drummer Christian Thomé .

Christiane Hommelsheim – shadows, fairies and me https://thecpr.org.uk/product/christiane-hommelsheim-shadows-fairies-and-me/ Wed, 11 Nov 2015 11:13:52 +0000 http://thecpr.org.uk/?post_type=product&p=2952 Music from the wonderful Christiane Hommeslheim who presented a workshop and performance at Giving Voice 13,  April 2015, Falmouth

The vocalist Christiane Hommelsheim presents her first solo album under the mysterious name “Shadows, Fairies and Me”.

On entering the room of “Shadows” one encounters the many voices of Christiane Hommelsheim. You can hear her voice in all shades: it gurgles, whispers, whines, sings and speaks, sometimes alone, then  in duet or with a choir. From a simple melody, a simple rhythm sometimes grows outlandish songs or timeless hymns. This solo polyphony is possible through the virtuoso use of a  Loop sampler. The machine is here an instrument and takes on the role of companion, replacing the band or orchestra. Simultaneously, the loop forms the style of recurring themes like love, loneliness, death. The Loop as an endless loop of life, a media mantra.

Stimulated by intense vocal work in the Roy-Hart method (“The voice is the muscle of the soul”)and in the tradition of American singers like Meredith Monk or Shelley Hirsch, Christiane Hommelsheim looks in her artistic work for the essence of  voice and the relationships between voice, body and consciousness. While others may have made an appearance as a co-performer – David Moss or vocal acrobat duo “Haarmann Hommelsheim”- she now dares with “Shadows” to go it alone, but accompanied by their many voices.

His work is viewed as profuse & crucial in the map of Latin American contemporary music, new opera and performance. Always pushing the musical lines between the classical, the contemporary & the popular, his career is distinguished by a defiant spirit of independence & a desire to constantly break new ground, whilst his music has been described as the first time that Latin America has led the avant-garde. Having been awarded important prizes throughout his career, in 2011 he was honored with a prestigious award from the National Arts Foundation of Argentina for his out-standing artistic achievement.

Edelstein founded the ENS in 1997 – the format may look like the instruments associated with the world of rock or jazz but the result is completely different. Comparisons have made from Edgar Varese to Astor Piazzolla, or from Frank Zappa to John Cage, but really what speaks about the music of the ENS is the driving rhythms & the relentless quest for originality.
